Forgery of Senate Rule: Trial continue today, Presidency not behind prosecution of Saraki, Ekweremadu – Adesina

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina has insisted that the Presidency was not behind the current legal battle been faced by the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu. Saraki alongside his deputy, Ekweremadu have been arraigned before an FCT High Court, Abuja for alleged forgery of senate rules in 2015. Adesina made the assertion while speaking with the Punch. The Senate President is also being prosecuted at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, for false and anticipatory declaration of assets. On whether the case against Saraki would be withdrawn if he stepped down as President of the Senate, Adesina said, “Senator Saraki’s legal battle was not originated by the Presidency in the first place, so this issue does not arise.” The trial for the alleged forgery of senate rules is expected to continue today . Ikorodu Attacks - Government Deploys Army, Policemen to Restore Peace

Following the spate of attacks, the Lagos State Police Command and the 81 Division, Nigerian Army, have deployed over 1,000 security personnel to restore peace in troubled Igbolomu, Ikorodu, where a suspected militant group is feared to have killed over a dozen residents at weekend. The community remained deserted yesterday, despite the presence of security operatives, as residents, who fled their homes are yet to return. Army spokesman in Lagos, Lieutenant Colonel Kingsley Samuel, told The Guardian on telephone that the Army has cordoned off the area and restored peace. The troops of 21 Brigade and Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) conducted a fighting patrol on Zangebe, Maiwa, Algaiti and Mainari villages today where they killed six Boko Haram terrorists and injured several others. The troops also freed over 5,000 people being held hostage by Boko Haram terrorists and recovered five motorcycles and bicycles each. The presidential jet that conveyed the President landed at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at about 5.33pm. Code Of Conduct Tribunal Adjourns Saraki’s Trial Over Motion Seeking Judge’s Disqualification Again

The Federal Government has opposed a fresh application by the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, seeking the disqualification of the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar, from further presiding over his trial on charges of false and anticipatory asset declaration. Saraki, through his lawyer, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), filed his fresh application on June 13, 2016, accused Umar of making a remark showing his bias against him (Saraki) during the proceedings on June 7, 2016, while warning the defence against delay tactics. Umar reportedly made the statement that was picked up by Saraki while warning the defence that their delay tactics would not “reduce the consequences the defendant will meet in this tribunal at the end of the trial.” Saraki, in his fresh application, alleged that Umar’s statement would prejudice the outcome of the trial. In a recent development, an angry mob of residents and passersby at Barzon street, off Ibusa Road in Asaba, Delta state, flogged two men to pulp. The duo were flogged for entering a one-storey apartment building in the street tosteal, under the guise that the landlord hadsent them to carry out a repair on thethunder protector unit installed in the housefollowing a heavy rain in Asaba the previous day. According to NGLatest, the two men were unfortunate, as the caretaker of the house met them cutting the lightening rod cables and called the landlord to verify their actions. The suspects immediately fled the scene but were caught meters away by some residents who gave them a hot chase. Barring any last minute changes in plan, President Muhammadu Buhari is expected back in the country on Thursday (today) from London. Buhari had penultimate Monday commenced a 10-day holiday and proceeded to London on the same day. The Presidency had, in a statement, indicated that the President would during the visit to the United Kingdom, see an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for a persistent ear infection. The 10-day holiday ended on Wednesday. A source in the Presidency, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The PUNCH on Wednesday that arrangements had been put in place to receive the President, who is due back in the country on Thursday. “He is expected back on Thursday (today). N’ Delta avengers: Reps ask FG to secure N35.8bn funding for amnesty programme

The House of Representatives on Wednesday asked the Federal Government to immediately initiate a “sustainable plan” to end the militancy in the Niger Delta. Lawmakers said the “confrontational approaches” adopted by the government so far would only worsen the bombing of oil facilities by militants. In its resolution in Abuja, the House also called on the government to secure additional N35.8billion funding for the amnesty programme in a bid to guarantee the continuous payment of allowances and training of ex-agitators. The resolution followed a motion jointly sponsored by 31 members of the House, cutting across the six geo-political zones of the country to draw attention to the renewed militancy in the Niger Delta by the Niger Delta Avengers. A member from Cross River State, Mr. Ekpenyong Ayi, who led the debate, said the N35.8bn was actually a shortfall of the original N55.8bn proposed by the Presidential Amnesty Office as its 2016 budget.
