The happiness and joy in wedding is as sweet as sweeten in chocolate, just as its tragedy is as painful as the end of Romeo and Juliet. Over few months now, one of the most interesting movie trending and rocking in town is THE WEDDING PARTY a 2016 Nigerian romantic comedy drama film, directed by Kemi Adetiba that premiered on 8 September 2016 at TIFF Toronto and on 26 November 2016 at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos where Banky Wellington (Dozie Onwuka) and Adesua Etomi (Dunni Coker) play not only a major role but a fantastic and romantic one.
The movie is with an extra-ordinary theme portraying some tragedy and misfortunes that do surround wedding preparation, most especially a day to the wedding day. In reality, there are lots of preparations and hopes in everybody participating in the wedding, the closer the day, the more the doer panic. Most especially in the case of inter-ethnic marriage where there is always controversy between the two families before the marriage. This is exactly what the story is all about.
Banky W, the groom is from southern part of Nigeria who deeply fell in love with a beautiful attractive young lady Dunni Coker who is from Western part of the country. Due to difference in their ethnicity and family socio-economic background, Mrs Obianuju Onwuka the bride’s mother insisted that the marriage won’t take place.
Mrs Tinuade Coker (Shola Sobowale) the groom’s mother, performed excellent as she is popularly known for her exaggerate actions. The trouble and conflicts between the two families cannot be narrated. The two father-in-laws Chief Felix Onwuka (Richard Mofe) and Bamidele Coker (Ali Baba) seems to understand each other, but the mother-in-laws are always engulfing fire just as Sango and Ogun battled each other in their days.
Their battle begun with the photo magazine published for the wedding. Even thou it is Coker’s family that is sponsoring the wedding, the prominent of Onwuka’s family was exaggerated.
The tragedy begun with the best man who got accident on the wedding day. He has no choice than to send his cousin Rosie (the groom ex-girlfriend) to bring the wedding suit and ring. Rosie took them to Dozie (Banky W) and decided to give him wedding gift before he goes for his bride. Luckily Chief Felix barge in, else what would have happen beyond imagination.
Earlier the day, the bride and her family were snapping pictures somewhere in their garden. As they were rushing to the church, Mrs Coker mistakenly stood on the bridal’s gown and it torn. Dunni was very angry, seems they too don’t really get along. Mrs Coker as earlier replaced the bride’s cateria with Iya micheal. Iya micheal is famous with her sweet gbegiri soup.
During the church services, as the bride came in, the whole attendance stood up to honor the bride except the groom’s mother. The pastor asks if anyone is against the joining of the bride and her groom, everybody was panic and focus at Mrs Onwuka. The pastor eventually joined them since no one is against it.
After church services, they left the church for reception. About few kilometres to the venue, the bride and the groom were kissing in their car. Dunni’s sweat stained Dozie’s suite and she intends to remove handkerchief from Dozie’s pocket to clean it. Surprisingly, she removed ‘pantkerchief’ (ladies underwear). It was very hard for Dozie to calm her, and convince her to belief he is innocent. He taught one of his guys was playing prank, not knowing it was Rosie’s trap.
Dunni is an easily furious person but not to spoil the wedding, she forgive him even thou it a very hard decision. At the reception venue, Cokers’ family were very worried. The couple kept them waiting while solving their misunderstanding. Mrs Cooker has started creating a scene, thinking her daughter has been kidnaped, but Mrs Onwuka been an arrogant person insisted that her son is the only person got kidnaped. Few minutes later, the couple arrived.
At the reception, the host of the event, Ayo Makun popularly known as AY open the event with prayer by a very funny pastor. I still wondered whether his prayer is actually prayer or the other way round.
It’s time for the two families to dances in, but the question is who dances first? The Cokers’ families want to dances first but Mrs Obianuju Onwuka insisted that her families dances first. In other to settle argument, the activating director of the event, Wonuola (Zainab Balogun) suggests the both families should dance in together. What a nice idea, hum? But belief me it’s the worst humiliation ever. At the end, the Onwuka dances first while Cokers’ follows.
Shola was chosen as the new bride, he was supposed to present the flash that contain some remarkable events footage. That night he was drunk. Instead, he gave the footage of bachelor’s night. The flash contains party and romancing footage organised for the groom. Everybody was surprised to see how pretty ladies were romancing the groom that night, and the bride couldn’t bear it, so she left furiously.
Dozie would have go after her he was stopped by Dunni’s friend, they promised to bring her back. Dozie left the hall for a store room where gifts were kept, surprisingly a thief was inside with a gun. The thief attacked them but didn’t demand for anything until both families completed in the room. He only introduces himself as Lukman.
Mrs Tinuade Coker said to the thief “oga, what do you want? Is it money? Tell me how much? One million? five millions? ten millions?” her husband quickly cut in, “there is no money, we are broke”. I can’t stop laughing anytime I remember this particular scene. It got to a point that both families were settling their quarrels at gun point.
Shola who ruins everything is also the angel that saves them from the bondage. As he bagged in, the door hit the thief from behind and he fell, Nonso Onwuka (Dozie’s brother) crushed him and took his gun. Dozie is finally free to go after his bride.
He didn’t have to search the whole city before getting to know where she was, it’s definitely their favourite beach side. Go away Dozie, I don’t want to see you again. “I’m not going to leave you, not for better, not for worse, not for richer not for poor” Dozie said. To cut the long story short, the couples reconciled and moved on back to their wedding party.
The wedding was gracefully blessed with lots of love, happiness, music and dances. I highly recommend this movie to you if you haven’t watch it, you can’t avoid to missed it.
