Reps summon FCT Minister over tax

Image
The House of Representatives on Wednesday summoned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Alhaji Mohammad Bello, to appear before its Committee on FCT over taxes being collected in the territory. There is, however, no specific date for the minister to appear before the committee. The minister is expected to explain to the committee, why the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is collecting taxes in the nation’s capital and not the FCT Inland Revenue Service. This followed a motion moved by Rep. Abdulrazak Namdas (Adamawa-APC) on matters of urgent public importance which was unanimously adopted by members through a voice vote. Namdas, while moving the motion, said that the FCT Inland Revenue Services and its Management Board had authorized the FCT to establish a board that would collect all forms of taxes and levies. The committee is to report the outcome of its meeting with the Minister to the House within two weeks for further legislative action.

Linda Ikeji is no longer an inspiration

Image
Every Nigerian knows Linda Ikeji ’s story, how she came up from nothing and became one of the richest young women in the country. Linda epitomizes hard work and persistence and shows that determination is the key to success. This used to be enough to make her an inspiring person, but it isn’t anymore. Frankly Speaking With Jola Sotubo, posted on pulse.ng Linda Ikeji’s fame and wealth have increased in great proportions over the past five years, but she has wasted so many opportunities to make real impact that I wonder if her good fortune has taught her anything. The only thing Linda seems to have acquired with her position is money, possessions and a growing sense of vanity. The average Nigerian might think being rich is the be–all and end–all of life, but a person whose only boast is in money is as poor as poor can get. Why does Linda Ikeji insist on making safe and passé fashion choices? Linda why are you still matching clothes and shoes in 2016? Why...

Describing his childhood, Diobi once said: “Growing up was tough, it was filled with challenges because I didn’t come from a rich family. “I struggled through everything. In my family we have to work to get what we wanted and because my mum is a strong woman she never gave up on us. “Things were so hard back then that I had to sell cheap clothes to my friends in school just to survive, that memory makes me laugh compared to my life now.” “If you have or know anyway u can help me heal...

The Senate president, Bukola Saraki, has said that his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal would not disturb Senate proceedings, a statement said in Abuja on Monday. The statement was issued by Saraki’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu. “It would be recalled that at the preliminary stage of the trial, senators had always accompanied the Senate president to the tribunal each time the case came up for hearing,” the statement said. “But Saraki said now that the trial proper has commenced and the Senate is in session, he would not want the trial to affect legislative business. It said the president of the Senate spoke following the announcement of the tribunal Chairman,  Danladi Umar, that proceedings at the trial would hold daily henceforth. “Saraki also said ‘I am the one on trial not the Senate. NASS reaches truce with Presidency over 2016 budget

Image
There has been a series of meetings within members of the National Assembly and the Presidency over the 2016 budget amendments, both parties have now reached a truce. A Presidential official reportedly asserted that the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, had also met severally with key functionaries of the NASS and explained to them the imperatives of reworking the budget in the overall interest of Nigerians. President Muhammadu Buhari has presented “The Budget of Change”, his first spending plan, to the National Assembly on December 22, 2015. The proposed N6.08tn 2016 budget is the highest ever presented by a Nigerian president, and a high jump from N4.35 trillion budget of 2015. It seems impractical as the Country’s main source of revenue- Oil has crashed from $119 to $38 per barrel. Nigeria experienced a 50% drop in projected oil revenue, as projections tumbled from N1.64 trillion in 2015 to N820bn in 2016. The government expects t...

CCT vs Saraki: Confusion in Senate over who presides in plenary

Image
Bukola Saraki in court In a bid to save his position as the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, yesterday, begged the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, sitting in Abuja, to reconsider its decision to conduct day-to-day hearing on the 13-count criminal charge the Federal Government entered against him. Saraki, through his consortium of lawyers, led by former Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, prayed the tribunal to at least allow him to conduct legislative duties three days in a week. Remarkably, the day-to-day trial order by Justice Danladi Umar-led tribunal came on the heels of an intensified bid by the Senate to amend the Code of Conduct Bureau/Tribunal Act, a move that has continued to elicit negative reactions from different quarters. The Justice Danladi Umar-led tribunal had at the resumed sitting on the case, yesterday, said it would henceforth try the defendant on daily basis.
